New Delhi: About 21 Dalit organizations across the country have approached the National Commission for Scheduled Castes in connection with the brutal killing of Dalit man Lakhbir Singh at a farmers' protest site on the Singhu border on the Delhi-Haryana border. He has requested the Commission to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the murder. However, Sikh religious bodies have denied the case as Dalit versus Sikh, as the Nihang group has a large number of Dalits.

The letters seek a time-bound inquiry into the case and punishment for all those involved in vandalism. Chairman of the Commission Vijay Sampla said that the indignity of the book among Sikhs is a serious crime but no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. Sampla further said, "We have already sent a notice to DGP Haryana and the Chief Secretary to take stern action on this and have sought a refund report by fax.''

He further said that the place where the accused hanged him is near the farmers' stage. The agitating farmers are responsible for whatever happens there. Their role is similar to that of criminals. Sampla said the farmers' leaders have brushed aside the whole issue. If they have been staging dharna with them for 10 months and living with them, they are part of the same protest.
