Bengaluru: On Sunday, The Karnataka government sounded a high alert against bird flu (Avian Influenza) outbreak after about 23,000 chickens died in a poultry farm at Molkera village in Humnabad taluk of Bidar district.

Following the death of a few chicken in the farm belonging to one Ramesh Gupta last week, officials of the animal husbandry and health departments visited the farm, collected samples and sent them to National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.

Doctors and scientists of the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary, Biologicals, (IAH&VB) Bengaluru, visited the farm in Bidar and collected samples for testing at the National Institute High Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal. They tested positive for H5N1, the Minister said.

The Minister said, “There is no need to panic as there are no other farms in the village.”

The minister said that according to norms, all poultry birds within a radius of 1km of the affected farm should be culled and poultry farms within a radius of 3km should be strictly monitored. " And we are already at it," he added, requesting the public not to panic.

A team comprising Joint Director IAH&VB would visit Bidar and take steps to control the disease.

The State has around 7,000 farms, which have both egg layers and broiler varieties, with a stock of more than five crore birds and a daily egg production of about 1.2 crore, according to officials.
