Guwahati: At the Kamakhya Railway Station in Guwahati, an unclaimed container of 235 endangered turtle species was found.
The Railway Protection Force made the arrest on Saturday night. The majority of the turtles captured were Indian flap shell turtles, which are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN. They were tucked away in ten suitcases with no one to look after them. The turtles were suspected of being smuggled by wildlife traffickers, but an inquiry has been launched to confirm this.
The shipment was discovered on the 19305 Indore-Kamakhya train. The turtles were transferred to the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden after being handed over to the forest department. They will be treated by the zoo's veterinary professionals before the rehabilitation process begins.
