Bangalore: Twenty-four girl students studying in a college in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district have been banned for a period of seven days from entering classes for wearing a hijab. The decision was taken after the authorities of Uppinangadi Degree College in Puttur Taluk refused to enter classes without the girl students taking off their hijab.

Tuesday's incident comes at a time when the Karnataka government has issued guidelines for schools and colleges, making uniforms mandatory for girl students without giving any space to wear the hijab in classrooms. Though most students prefer to attend classes, one section has insisted on allowing them to go to classes wearing a hijab.

Many students belonging to the minority community (Muslim) have applied for transfer certificates (TCs) from educational institutions to join other colleges, where they are allowed to enter the classroom wearing a hijab. The college management has also told the students that those who want to come to the class wearing hijab can get the transfer certificate. Despite the Karnataka High Court's order, some girl students in the state are insisting on wearing hijab in the classroom, after which the administration has become strict.
