26/11 10th anniversary: A repeat of Mumbai terror attack could lead to India-Pakistan war

Washington: As India sadly recalls the dreadful 2008 Mumbai terror attack ahead of its 10th anniversary on Monday, scores of scholars, former diplomats and US officials have warned that another foremost terrorist attack originating from Pakistan of the extent alike to the 26/11 strike could easily rocket into a regional war.

Worth mention here as many as 166 people, including Americans, were killed in the attack that was carried out by 10 Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists. Nine of the attackers were gunned down by police, while the lone survivor, Ajmal Kasab, was caught and hanged to death after trial by an Indian court.

The perpetrators of the 26/11 attack, including instigator and banned Jamat-ud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, keep on to move freely in Pakistan and it clearly shows that Islamabad is not keen on bringing them to justice.

It is noted that the US has offered a reward of $10 million for information that could bring Saeed to justice.

Although the 26/11 attack case has marked into its 10th year, none of the suspects in Pakistan have been penalized yet. Now it is obvious that the case had never been in Pakistan’s priority list.

“The victims of 26/11 have yet to see the masterminds of the attack in the LeT and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) face justice; unfortunately, that is virtually impossible in Pakistan,” former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) representative Bruce Riedel told the leading news agency PTI.
