The world population is 7.3 billion now and out of these 3.58 billion people are using the Internet. 49.7 percent of the people in Asia use the internet. 17 percent in Europe and the lowest in the Middle East is 3.8 percent of people using the Internet. That number is fast moving forward. 48 years ago when the Internet was in existence, it was connected with just four computers, but today its network has spread all over the world.

The purpose was to promote education and research. When the Internet started in 1969, its access was only to the US military. The Advanced Research Projects Agency, Department of Defense, launched the 'Internet' era. However, then it was called ARPANET. Its aim was to promote richness and education in America.

ARPANET was commercialized in 1974 and Telnet Company used its commercial for the first time. Later it was named Internet. In the beginning, TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) was used to exchange information on the Internet.

Easier access to computers, the modernization of countries around the world and an increased utilization of smartphones has given people the opportunity to use the internet more frequently and with more convenience. However, internet penetration often pertains to the current state of development regarding communications networks.

As of March 2017, there were approximately 731 million total internet users in China and 287 million total internet users in the United States. However, broadband internet usage is not equally present in many countries and due to infrastructure reasons, developing online markets rely strongly on mobile connections. Subsequently, global mobile data traffic is set to surpass 49 exabytes per month in 2021, up from 7 exabytes per month as of 2016.
