Kanpur: Three rape cases have been reported in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh in just 24 hours, raising questions about the safety of women and girls in the city. Karan, an accused in the Kakadev area, raped a pregnant woman who was arrested by the police on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, a case of rape of a minor maid has come to light at Kalyanpur police station on Monday night in which an FIR for Pocso and rape has been registered against hardware shopkeeper Shankar on Monday itself. Police have arrested Shankar following the FIR.
Similarly, on Sunday night, former Inspector Dinesh Tripathi raped his tenant's 13-year-old girl, whose complaint was also registered on Monday and the accused former inspector has been arrested. Thus, three rape incidents in just 24 hours from Sunday to Monday have created panic among women and girls in Kanpur. Policemen in these cases are also not ready to say anything.
Within three months of the introduction of the police commissioner system in Kanpur, four women have been killed in the entire district with more than a dozen rape incidents so far. In such a situation, it is natural to question the functioning of the police. Right now, no police officer is ready to respond.
