New Delhi: 3.3 million people were rendered jobless in the three months of lockdown across the country during the corona epidemic. According to official data, the unemployment figure is only nine sectors in the country. The Government itself has presented these figures in Parliament. About 7.5 per cent of the people lost their jobs in the lockdown imposed during the Corona period last year. Nine major sectors have been included in the All India Quality Establishment Best Employment Survey (AQEES).

According to the survey, the manufacturing sector had rendered 14.2 lakh people unemployed between pre-lockdown that is 25th March 2020 and post-lockdown from 1st July 2020. One lakh people lost their jobs in the construction sector, 1.8 lakh in the trade sector and 2.8 lakh in the education sector. On the other hand, during the same lockdown, 0.4 lakh people were unemployed in the financial services sector and one lakh in the IT-BPO sector. Data shows that 7.44 per cent of women in nine major sectors lost their jobs. While the number of male employees being unemployed between the pre-lockdown and post-lockdown period was 7.48 per cent.

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Labour and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said that women employed in the manufacturing sector declined from 26.7 lakh (as of March 25, 2020) to 23.3 lakh (up to July 1, 2020). During the same period, the number of male workers in the manufacturing sector had come down from 98.7 lakh to 87.9 lakh. The number of women employees in the construction sector had come down from 1.8 lakh to 1.5 lakh, while male employees had also come down from 5.8 lakh to 5.1 lakh during this period. In the trade sector, women employees declined from 4.5 lakh to 4 lakh, while male employment declined from 16.1 lakh to 14.8 lakh.
