Kenya: according to a local official in a notorious accident hotspot in central Kenya, a bus has crashed into a river, killing at least 34 people.

The incident took place late Sunday night when the bus was on its way from the coastal town of Mombasa to Meru town.
The bus fell 130 feet (40 m) below a bridge and into the Nithi river valley.

Images of the bus being published in local media showed it torn apart after rolling down a steep slope, and reports said bodies and debris were scattered along the riverbank and in the water.

33 people were killed, according to a tweet by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), which also announced that Modern Coast Express Limited, the bus company, had accidentally suspended its operations.

"A comprehensive multi-agency investigation into the accident and evaluation of the operator's safety operating standards is underway," the statement continued.

Later, the county commissioner, Norbert Comora, reported that there were now 34 deaths.
"We have counted only 42 of the 45 passengers of the bus so far. These are people who have passed away or are in hospital. Three of them are still missing," he said.

Comora had earlier told reporters that the search was still on and we were trying to retrieve the debris. According to the Daily Nation newspaper Comora, preliminary investigations indicate that the bus's brakes may have failed, preventing its driver from taking a sharp turn on the bridge.

There have been more road accidents in Kenya in recent years.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, 4,579 people died in road accidents in Kenya in 2021, a 15% increase from the previous year.
