4 Himalayan Griffon vultures found dead in Assam

In a shocking incident, Four Himalayan Griffon vultures were found dead on the bank of a wetland at Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district on Sunday morning. It was believed that the vultures fed rotten dead cattle dumped openly.

forest department officials took away the dead vultures on Sunday for conducting post-mortem. The apathy by the villagers in disposing of their dead cattle has been blamed for the regular deaths of vultures in that region.

The number of vultures in Assam has declined due to open dumping of dead cattle and its consumption by the bird. In March 2015, a total of 30 vultures died on the banks of Kuwabari wetland near Hiloidari and Kowargaon village in Dhakuakhana for the same reason. n March 2017, a total of 17 vultures including three critically endangered Slender Billed vultures were found dead in Dhakuakhana.

Meanwhile.  interactive session on wildlife issues in Manas National Park held at Bansbari Range of Manas National Park on Sunday by the Assam State Legal Services Authority (ASLSA) in association with Aaranyak and in coordination with the forest department of BTR reagardin the issue related to the wild life.  Addressing the session, the head of forest department in BTR,  Anindya Swargiray, said even as there has been a rise in incidences of wildlife crimes in the BTR area, the conviction rate in respect of these offences has remained abysmally low.
