Indian boxers Ashish Kumar, Govind Sahni, Varinder Singh and Monika advanced to the finals of the Thailand Open international boxing tournament on Wednesday with victories in their respective events. Ashish, who won the gold medal in the 75kg category last season, performed as per expectations, registering a comfortable 5-0 win over Indonesia's Makhayal Robert Muskita in the 81kg semi-final to make it to the finals. In the men's 48kg category, Govind has to work hard against Nguyen Lin Phung of Vietnam.
In this match, both the boxers hit each other several times but the Indian player won the match by a fractured 4-1 decision. In the men's 60kg semi-final, Varinder was given a walkover by Palestine's Abdel Rahman Abunaab. Among women, 26-year-old Monica, who defeated two-time World Championship medalist Josie Gabuco in the previous round, defeated Tran Thi Dim Kiu of Vietnam in the semi-finals to reach the 48kg final.
Meanwhile, in the matches played earlier in the day, Amit Panghal won the men's quarterfinals while Rohit Mor (57kg) lost 0-5 to Rujakran Juntrang of Thailand. World Championships (2019) silver medalist Panghal clinched an easy victory over Thanakon Ayonyam of Thailand in men's 52kg by unanimous decision.
