Carrots may be the food best known for helping your eyes. But other foods and their nutrients may be more important for keeping your eyesight keen as you age. Healthy food is a good investment to maintain the normal functioning of the eyes.

Here are 5 major healthy foods which are healthy for your eyes.

  1. Eggs: Eggs are rich in cysteine and sulphur, two components of glutathione, a protein that acts as an antioxidant for the lens of the eye. This may explain why sulphur-containing compounds have been found to protect from cataract formation.
  2. Orange Veggies: The rich orange color in carrots, tomatoes and sweet potatoes is from Beta carotene, which the body converts to Vitamin A. It is a basic building block for the visual apparatus.
  3. Seeds, Nuts, and Wheat Germ: Vitamins C and E work together to keep healthy tissue strong. Have a small handful of sunflower seeds, or use a tablespoon of wheat germ oil in your salad dressing. Almonds, pecans, and vegetable oils are also good sources.
  4. Fish: Fatty fish are the quintessential source of Omega 3 fatty acids and DHA. These maintain the integrity of the surface of the eye. They prevent dry eyes and tear disturbances.
  5. Blueberries: Eating blueberries has been associated with the reduction of eye fatigue. As well as having the eye-healthy carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, blueberries contain anthocyanins, eye-nourishing phytonutrients which have been shown to improve night vision.
