Bhubaneswar: Various districts of Odisha have once again witnessed sky-high havoc. Five people died in lightning strikes during heavy rains in the state on Friday, with five others seriously injured. The injured have been admitted to hospitals for treatment. According to information, a farmer working in the fields in a village under Tuusinga police station in the Dhenkanal district of the state lost his life due to lightning. At the same time, a farmer also died in Kualo village under the Parjung police station area of another district due to lightning.

A similar incident was also witnessed in Bahripur village under the Kendujhar district. Where two farmers working in the fields have lost their lives due to lightning during heavy rains. At the same time, one person died and two others were seriously injured when they were hit by lightning during rain in the Padampur area of Bargarh district. Uma Shankar Das, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Office  (Met Office), has informed that Paradip and Gopalpur in Odisha have just two radars and there is a dire need to install more such equipment to issue a warning with area-specific lightning and thunderstorms in the state.

The MET department scientist has said that the state government has already provided infrastructure to install radars at Sambalpur and Chandipur, but the Centre has not fulfilled our long-pending demand. As a result, we are able to spread the alert that comes with just lightning and thunder in the districts, not by giving area-specific warnings.
