5 people died after consuming spurious liquor in Kerala, 9 others hospitalized

Kochi: Five people have died after allegedly drinking spurious liquor in a tribal colony in Kanjikod near Palakkad district of Kerala. 9 others, including three women, have been admitted to the hospital. According to police, the deceased have been identified as Raman (52), Ayyappan (55), his son Arun (22), Shivan (54 and his brother Murthy (33).

Police said, Ayyappan and Raman, a resident of the colony, died yesterday and have been buried. Both are more than 52 years old. The investigating officer said that on Monday morning, the residents of the colony were found dead outside their home, after which they reported it to us. We are registering three FIR. Police said, 9  people, including 3 women, are undergoing treatment in the District hospital here. Everybody was drunk yesterday.

Palakkad's SPG Shiv Vikram has told the media, "We do not know whether what he consumed was alcohol or not. The survivors have informed the police that it was a white-coloured substance whose aroma was like phenyl. We are examining the matter from all angles."
