NEW DELHI: According to new research released on Friday, the number of 5G smartphone shipments climbed by 14% (year-on-year) in India in the first quarter (Q1) of 2023, with the 5G smartphone shipment share rising to 41%.
CyberMedia Research (CMR) reports that 34 new 5G smartphone launches occurred in India during the first quarter of 2023, with Samsung holding a market share of 23% and Apple holding a market share of 17% respectively.
In addition, during Q1 2023, shipments of smartphones fell by 21% (year over year), while the country's entire mobile market fell by 20% (year over year).
The first Q1 fall in smartphone shipments since 2019 occurred in Q1 2023, and it is being blamed on inflation, weak demand, and excess inventory. According to Shipra Sinha, Analyst - Industry Intelligence Group, CyberMedia Research (CMR), "the overall feature phone segment declined by 19% (year-on-year), driven by muted demand and an increase in feature phone to smartphone upgrades."
The report also revealed that India saw declines of 38% (year-on-year) in the affordable smartphone segment (under Rs 7000), 25% (year-on-year) in the value-for-money smartphone segment (Rs 7000–Rs 25,000), and 23% (year-on-year) in the premium smartphone segment (Rs 25,000–Rs 50,000) as a result of difficult economic conditions and slow demand.
However, shipments of super-premium smartphones (Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,000,000) and ultra-premium smartphones (Rs 1,000,000 and above) increased significantly year over year by 96% and 208%, respectively.
In Q1 2023, Samsung (20%), Vivo (17%), and Xiaomi (16%) held the top three positions in the smartphone leaderboard, with Oppo (10%) and Realme (9%) following.

The survey also stated that in Q2 2023, the total number of 5G smartphone shipments is anticipated to surpass 100 million.
Samsung kept the top rank in the smartphone market in Q1 2023 in addition to the 5G smartphone market, with a 20% market share.
Vivo took second place with a 17% market share, while Xiaomi dropped to third place with a 16% share in the smartphone leaderboard.

Besides, Realme held the fifth position with a market share of 9%, while OPPO secured the fourth position with a market share of 10%.
However, Apple continued to grow steadily, capturing 7% of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2023 while significantly increasing its shipments (year-on-year) by 67%.
