BENGALURU: As many as 60 lakh "objectionable" videos generated by users in India have been removed from video-sharing platform TikTok. Battling controversy, the mobile application was recently removed from both Google Play and Apple iStore. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had asked Google and Apple to block the app following the Supreme Court's refusal to stay the original Madras HC court order on April 3.

The Supreme Court, which is hearing an appeal by TikTok contesting a Madras High Court order that asked the Centre to ban the application, has listed the case for Monday. The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere, for now, with the Madras High Court's order banning Chinese video app TikTok, and directed further hearing in the matter on April 22. Expressing concern over the "pornographic and inappropriate" contents of the TikTok, the High Court had, on April 3, directed the Centre to ban the app.

The Madras HC had cited the use of pornographic and abusive content as the reason for the ban. TikTok, used to create and share short videos with special effects, is a Chinese app with more than 5.4 crore active users in India. The rise of Chinese short video-sharing app TikTok in India has been so spectacular over the past year that it is now nearly impossible for any social media user to not have come across its content. Google and Apple removed the application after SC admitted the petition. Some other app may replace TikTok, but putting in place a system that disallows all platforms from having such content should be the priority.
