Islamabad: The death toll in a clash between two passenger trains in Ghotki district of Pakistan's southern province of Sindh has risen to 62 and more than 100 are still said to be injured. Sukkur Commissioner Shafiq Ahmed Mahesar said on Tuesday that rescue teams have recovered several bodies from the damaged coaches of the train, raising the death toll to 62.

He said more than 100 people were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Pano Akil, Ghotki and Mirpur Mathelo, out of which 15 are said to be in critical condition. Pakistan Railway spokesperson Nazia Jabin said that the accident took place when the Sir Syed Express train coming from East Rawalpindi district collided with the Millat Express train which was already on the track due to derailment. Pakistani Railway sources said, at least 13 coaches of two trains derailed and overturned after the collision. Seven to eight coaches were completely destroyed in the accident.

Police sources said, the special team is investigating the exact cause of the accident though they believe that the accident may have occurred due to several problems in railway tracks and signal systems. Meanwhile, authorities have restored the suspended train service since Monday morning.
