Chandigarh: A major accident took place in Ludhiana district of Punjab late on Tuesday night. Seven people of the same family were charred to death due to a fire in a slum near the municipal garbage dump yard on Tibba Road here. Assistant Commissioner of Police, East Ludhiana, Surinder Singh said the incident took place around 1:30 pm on April 19. As soon as the incident was reported, fire brigade and police teams rushed to the spot. The fire brigade extinguished the fire immediately. 7 corpses have been recovered from the hut. The family who lost their lives in the accident were migrant labourers and used to build a hut near the municipal garbage dump yard on Tibba Road.

SHO of Tibba police station Ranbir Singh identified the deceased as husband and wife and their five children. The family was a resident of the Samastipur district of Bihar. They have been identified as Suresh Sahni (55), his wife Aruna Devi (52), daughters Rakhi (15), Manisha (10), Geeta (8) and Chanda (5) and 2-year-old son Sunny. Rajesh, the eldest son of the migrant family, survived the accident as he had gone to his friend's house to sleep. Rajesh informed the police about his family. Rajesh told the police that his father Suresh Sahni used to work as a scrap dealer.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, East Ludhiana, Surinder Singh said that a team of doctors from the civil hospital rushed to the spot as soon as the accident was reported. DC Surabhi Malik and Police Commissioner Kaustab Sharma also reached the spot. Police fished out all the bodies from the hut and rushed them to the civil hospital for post-mortem. It is not known how the fire broke out in the hut. The police are investigating the case. The forensic team collected samples from the spot and sent them to the laboratory for examination. However, it is also suspected that someone in the slum set fire when the entire family was sleeping together. Police are investigating the case from every angle.
