New Delhi: Today is the death anniversary of India's greatest Indian thinker, philanthropist, writer, philosopher and revolutionary Jyotirao Govindrao Phule. He is also known as 'Mahatma Phule' and 'Jyotiba Phule'. 'Mahatma Phule' did many things for the upliftment of women and Dalits. He was against caste-based division and favouritism prevalent in Indian society. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule was born on 11 April 1827 in Pune. His mother's name was Chimnabai and father's name was Govindrao. His family had come to Pune from Satara many years ago and started doing flower work, due to which his generation was known as 'Phule'. On the occasion of the death anniversary of Jyotirao Phule, today we are telling you 7 important things related to his life.
1. Jyotirao's family used to make Gajra from flowers. This was the reason that his family was known as Phule. Jyotiba was only one year old when his mother died.
2. Jyotiba Phule studied in Marathi for some time, missed studies in the middle and later completed the seventh grade of English at the age of 21.
3. Mahatma Phule was married to Savitri Bai in the year 1840.
4. In order to improve the condition of women and to give them recognition in the society, they started a school in 1854. It was the first school in the country which was opened for girls.
5. Jyotiba started the marriage ceremony without a Brahmin-priest and it was also recognized by the Mumbai High Court. There were anti-child marriages and supporters of widow-marriage.
6. He did many things for the upliftment of Dalits. He raised the children of Dalits in his house and also opened a water tank for them. As a result, he was expelled from the caste.
7. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule gave up his life in Pune on 28 November 1890 at the age of 63.
