7 Railway Staff Get Suspension Following Odisha Train Tragedy

BHUBANESWAR: In relation to the triple train tragedy in Odisha, the Indian railway has taken action by suspending seven railway officials, including the three personnel who were arrested, as confirmed by an official statement on Wednesday.

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), three railway staff members involved in the train mishap have been apprehended.

Adhering to the protocols of the railway, any official who gets arrested is placed on suspension within 24 hours. Consequently, seven officials, which include the three arrested personnel, the station master, traffic inspector, and maintainers, have been suspended," stated Anil Kumar Mishra, the general manager of the south eastern railway (SER), during a media briefing. When questioned about the rationale behind their suspension, Mishra expressed, "If the officials had been more vigilant, this tragic train mishap could have been averted."

On Wednesday, Kharagpur's Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and General Manager Mishra conducted an inspection of the Bahanaga Bazar station.

On July 7, the CBI, responsible for investigating the case, apprehended Arun Kumar Mahanta, a senior section engineer (signal), Mohammed Amir Khan, a section engineer, and Pappu Kumar, a technician. The charges pressed against them fall under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

Following the completion of a five-day remand, the arrested officials have now been granted an additional four-day remand by the CBI.

The tragic accident near the Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Odisha's Balasore district on the evening of June 2 resulted in the loss of at least 293 lives, with over 1,000 individuals sustaining injuries. The incident involved the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, Howrah-bound SMVP-Howrah Superfast Express, and a goods train.
