Mumbai: The Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against six people accused of stealing groundwater. According to the FIR of Azad Maidan Police, in 11 years these people have stolen groundwater worth Rs 73 crore. These six people include Pandya Mansion owner of Bomanji Master Lane and three water tanker operators. According to police, the owners illegally dug two wells. To run the water pump, electricity was burnt by adding a slab.

According to the FIR, these people sold about 6.1 lakh tanker water. Each tanker carries 10,000 liters of water. In 11 years, each tanker was sold for an average of Rs 1,200. Accordingly, he earned at least Rs 73.19 crore. The property owner Tripura Prasad Nanalal Pandya and two directors of his company Prakash Pandya and Manoj Pandya are listed in the FIR. According to the police, they stole water with the help of tanker operators- Arun Mishra, Dheeraj Mishra and Shravan Mishra. According to media reports, the evidence was given to the police by an RTO activist.

Earlier, the police of Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station had also filed a charge sheet against the owners of Pandya Mansion for forgery in the building plan. The National Green Tribunal ordered the wells to be closed forever. This is probably the first episode in the country of such a massive theft of groundwater. The Madras High Court had said in October 2018 that those illegally exploiting groundwater could be punished under the IPC.
