These churches are known as 'Church of Lalibela', which are in the city of Lalibela in Ethiopia. There are 11 such churches here, which have been built beautifully by cutting rocks. It is said that these red and orange rocks are formed from the lava after the volcano erupted. These churches are believed to have been built between the 12th and 13th centuries and were built by a king named Lalibela, who belonged to the Jagwe dynasty. The city was also named Lalibela after his name and the churches are also known as Lalibela's Church.
It is said that King Lalibela wanted to make this place 'Jerusalem of Africa' by building churches. Let us tell you that Jerusalem is a holy pilgrimage center of Christianity. This city is called the workplace of Jesus Christ. There are more than 150 churches here. According to an estimate, it took nearly 20 years to build these churches by cutting rocks. They are made with minor tools like hammer and chisel. The most special thing here is that a tunnel has been made by cutting rocks to connect one church with another church. The construction of these churches is said to have been made by angels from heaven. The story prevails among the people of Lalibela that laborers used to work here during the day and when they used to go to sleep at night, the angels came down from heaven and gave shape to the church. In 1978, these churches were included in the list of World Heritage by UNESCO.
