8000 Indians imprisoned worldwide, highest in Saudi Arabia

New Delhi: 8,000 Indian prisoners are languishing in various jails in 82 countries all over the world. This information has been given by the Ministry of External Affairs in Parliament. Of them, 4058 prisoners are imprisoned in six Gulf countries. In these countries, Indians traditionally come in search of better employment opportunities. According to MEA, 267 Indian prisoners are imprisoned in the US and 373 in the UK. There are more than 100 Indians in jails in eleven countries.

Most Indians with 1570 prisoners are in Saudi Arabia. Then there is the United Arab Emirates, which has 1292 Indian prisoners. According to External Affairs Ministry records, there are 460 Indians in Kuwait, 439 in Qatar, 178 in Bahrain, 70 in Iran, and 49 Indians in Oman. At the same time, the maximum is Nepal (886), followed by Pakistan (524), China (157), Bangladesh (123), Bhutan (91), Sri Lanka (67) and Myanmar (65). Interestingly, according to MEA, there is no Indian prisoner in Afghanistan. There are 409 Indian prisoners in Malaysia, 71 imprisonments in Singapore. There are 41 Indians in the Philippines, while in Thailand 23 and in Indonesia 20 are closed in their jails.

In Australia, 62 Indians are languishing in jails, while Canada and Cyprus have 23 prisoners. 35 in France, 22 in Greece, 24 in the Maldives, and 49 Indians in Spain are closed. Replying to a question, the Ministry said that Indian missions/posts abroad "remain vigilant and closely monitored."  There have been incidents of imprisonments of Indian nationals abroad for violation of local laws or alleged violation of local laws.
