Agartala: The Central Government has achieved a major success in order to establish peace in the North-East. A tripartite agreement (Memorandum of Settlement) was signed on Saturday between the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Tripura government and the militant outfit 'National Liberation Front of Tripura-Sabir Debbarma' (NLFT-SD). According to it, 88 members of the banned militant outfit will lay down their arms. After the signing, the NLFT-SD representatives also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The NLFT was banned under the Illegal Activities (Prevention) Act in 1997. According to a note issued by the government, the agreement was signed by Joint Secretary (North East) Satyendra Garg of the Union Home Ministry, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Alok Kumar of the Government of Tripura and Sabir Kumar Debbarma and Kajal Debbarma on behalf of the NLFT-SD. The NLFT-SD has agreed to abjure violence, join the mainstream and abide by the Indian Constitution.

It has also agreed that 88 of its members will surrender with their weapons and ammunition soon. On the other hand, the government has assured NLFT-SD leaders that its surrendering members will be given benefits under the Union Home Ministry's 'Surrender Rehabilitation Scheme-2018'.

"The Tripura government will assist the surrendered members of the NLFT-SD in building their homes, recruiting government jobs and providing education facilities to their children," the note said. The Centre will also consider the Tripura government's proposal for economic development in tribal areas of the state. "This is certainly a great step to peace.
