Gwalior: A statue of Nathuram Godse, established here by the Hindu Mahasabha on November 15, was detached on Tuesday by the system, an official statement said.

Godse is the murderer of Mahatma Gandhi and was hanged for his criminal act in 1949.

Additional District Magistrate Shivraj Singh Verma said: "The statue of Godse, established inside the Hindu Mahasabha office, was detained today.  EssentialInquiry is taking place."

The Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha's proceed had received global criticism and protest from Gandhians and the Congress. The authorities then issued a notice to the group's head Jaiveer Bharadwaj who did not answer back.

 Top Congress leaders had given the authorities time until Tuesday to eliminate it, threatening to eradicate it themselves if they did not do so.

The atmosphere was stressed as Tuesday morning as Mahasabha workers had collected stones, bricks, and sticks to respond to police action. Police were posted outside its office.

On the other hand, the detachment was carried out without any foremost interference with the authorities saying the police will take over the case from here.
