Ahead of Meghalaya assembly Polls 2018, 2 independent MLAs resign

Two Independent MLAs - Julias K Dorphang and John Leslee K Sangma, submitted on Friday their resignation letters to Meghalaya Assembly Speaker ahead of the February 27 election.

Dorphang, who is behind the bars now after he was detained last year for his alleged engagements in a sex scandal involving a minor girl and charged under POCSO, submitted his resignation through his counsel.

Their resignation letters have been submitted to Speaker for information and necessary act.

23 out the 60 MLAs have resigned till date following the February 27 Assembly Polls.

"We have received the resignation letters of Julias and John Leslee today. Their resignation letters have been forwarded to Speaker for information and necessary action," Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons told PTI.

Sources close to John said he is expected to fight the upcoming elections 2018 on an NCP ticket.

Meghalaya and Nagaland will vote on 27 February which is a Tuesday and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura all have 60 seats each.

As per reports of PTI, which showed that Women electoral outnumbered men in the state of Meghalaya. In the voters' list which was just published showed Women make up 50.4 percent of the registered voters. There are 18, 30,104 voters, of which 9,23,848 are women. No one registered under the third gender option. Meghalaya, with a population of 3.2 million people, has a hopeful literacy rate of 74.4 percent.
