-Here is the best way to worship Lord Shiv and Maa Parvati would be to rise early in the morning and take bath. 

-The next thing should be to visit a Shiva temple and offer puja, during the puja the first thing is to offer kachha jal (slow and steady stream of water) to Shivling for shivratri puja. This should be followed by offering a mix of jal and milk offering to Shivling. 

-The next thing to be offered is dahi followed by ghee. After ghee you can offer honey followed by jal again. Items like bhasam and sugarcane juice are also offered. It would be wise to offer Bhel leaves, scented flowers and marking tripund with sandal paste to the Shivling. 

-The three stripes of the tripund represent spiritual knowledge, purity and penance. Such worship bestows disease free life, wards off the fear of untimely death, happy married life and stability in thoughts & actions. 

Chanting Shri Mahamritunjaya Mantra is considered very propitious on this day. Recitation of “Shri Bhilvashtkam”, “Shri Shiv Lingashtakam” and “Rudra Sukta” is also very auspicious. Shiv Puja has the amazing power to get and individual rid of his/her past lives sins and improve his/her upcoming years in the life.

Benefits of  MahaShivratri Puja

Besides Shivling poojan it is also advisable to worship Rudraksha on this day. Worshipping Rudraksha or wearing it after worship on this day removes the fear of death and wards off untimely death to the devotees. Individuals having serious planetary afflictions should fast on this day and please Lord Shiva by way of worship. Mahashivratri Puja has the power to remove the most negative of the known planetary afflictions so no one can afford to miss pujan on this day.

It is advisable that everyone should worship “Shri Kaal Bhairav Nath” too on Mahashivratri. Lord Kaal Bhairav Nath is the punishing manifestation of Lord Shiva and Shiv Poojan is considered incomplete without Bhairav Poojan. It is also understood to deliver the devotees from the mistakes encountered during Mahashivratri Pooja. Reciting “Shri Kaal Bhairav Ashtkam” and/or reciting “Shri Kaal Bhairav Ashtotar Naamavali” can be a good source to please Lord Kaal Bhairav Nath.
