'Bharat Bandh' against fuel price hikes : Congress takes to the streets

New Delhi: A number of opposition parties - led by grand old Congress together have called for a 'Bharat Bandh' on Monday to protest against historic hike on petrol and diesel prices across the country. Price of both diesel and petrol crossed record levels and these are already having set records earlier this year.  He rose for almost all of last week and petrol even breached the Rs 80/litre mark in the national capital Delhi.

Due to Bharat Bandh, Extra deployment of forces has been done across the city today. Firm action will be taken on any miscreants taking the law into their hands, tweeted Commissioner of Police, Pune City, Dr Venkatesham K.

Even as the common man contortion daily, the government has repeatedly laid blames on global factors for the pitch in prices. "Due to two major external factors this unavoidable situation is there in market. American dollar is creating a unique and unavoidable situation which is not good for world's economy also," Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had stated on Friday. He also made allegations OPEC for not producing as much as previously assured.

Section 144 (which prevents assembly of five or more people in an area) imposed in Jharkhand capital of Ranchi from 0500hrs to 1700hrs.Congress has stated bandh would be in effect from 0900hrs till 1500hrs.
