Budget 2018: 3073 crores will be spent for Digital India, 5G Testbed will open in Chennai

Finance Minister  Arun Jaitley allocated Rs 3,037 crore for Digital India, announcing the budget on Thursday. He said that indigenous testbed will be opened in Chennai for 5G technology. One lakh Gram Panchayats will be added under BharatNet project. The Finance Minister put a lot of emphasis on technology in his budget.   

“Global economy is transforming into a digital economy thanks to the development of cutting-edge technologies in digital space, machine learning, artificial intelligence, Internet of things, 3D printing and the like,” Mr. Jaitley said.  He said that technology is extremely important for improving the quality of education. Regional connectivity has benefited from a flying plan.

The Finance Minister said that brand band connectivity will be delivered to 5 crore rural areas. The Finance Minister also mentioned the machine learning technology and 3D printing in the budget.  “Combining cyber and physical systems has great potential to transform not only innovation ecosystem but also our economies and the way we live,” the minister said. 

“To harness the benefit of emerging new technologies, particularly the ‘Fifth Generation’ (5G) technologies and its adoption, the Department of Telecom will support the establishment of an indigenous 5G Test Bed at IIT, Chennai,” Mr. Jaitley said. An amount of nearly ₹ 135 crores has been provisioned for the same.
