New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat together with two other members of the EC will visit  pol bound states Nagaland and Meghalaya from Wednesday ahead of the February 27 Assembly Polls in the two northeastern states.

Chief Election Commissioner Rawat along with the two commissioners would first visit Nagaland and then Meghalaya over the next three days, officials in the Election Commission (EC) said.

They would interact with officials of the state governments, those attached to the poll panel for conducting elections, representatives of political parties and top officials involved with law and order.  In Nagaland, most candidates representing political parties had filed nominations on the last day on February 7.

In Nagaland, 256 nominations have been filed for the 60-member House. The ruling NPF is  fighting on 59 seats, followed by the newly-floated Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party led by three-time chief minister Neiphiu Rio on 40 seats.    

The BJP has fielded candidates on 20 seats while Congress is fighting on 19 seats.

Meanwhile, in Meghalaya, a total of 443 candidates have filed papers for the 60 member house.

These candidates take account of 59 of the Congress, 53 of the NPP and 47 contestants of the BJP besides other regional parties and independents.
