Jammu, Jan 27 (NT): At least 40 people were killed and 140 others wounded when a Taliban suicide bomber, driving an explosive-laden ambulance, triggered an explosion near the old interior ministry building in Kabul.

The offices of the European Union and the High Peace Council are also close to, along with a number of foreign embassies and the police headquarters.

Officials feared the death toll would get higher. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

“It’s a massacre,” said Dejan Panic, the coordinator for the Emergency aid organization’s trauma hospitals in Afghanistan. At least 50 people were brought to Emergency’s Kabul hospital.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today condemned the car bomb attack in the Afghan capital, saying, "We all must unite to vanquish this nexus of terror."

"I strongly condemn the suicide car bomb attack in the Afghan Capital. We all must unite to vanquish this nexus of terror. My thoughts & (and) prayers go out to the victims & their families," Mehbooba wrote on Twitter.

Witnesses said a huge, thick plume of smoke rose into the sky after the explosion.

The attack took place a week after five heavily armed Taliban suicide bombers stormed Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel in a highly secured part of the city, killing at least 22 people. Four Americans were among the 14 foreigners killed in the attack.
