New Delhi: The Prime minister Modi led Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval to a bill to restore the original provisions of a law on atrocities in opposition to Dalits and tribals, granting to a key demand of Dalit groups ahead of their protest and call for a 'Bharat Bandh' on August 9, a top government source and leading news agency ANI reported.

"Cabinet approves bringing the SC/ST prevention of atrocities Bill during the monsoon session of the parliament amid the deadline set by LJP(Lok Janshakti Party) and Dalit organisations", ANI tweeted.

The bill to bring back the original provisions of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act will be tabled in Parliament, the Government sources further said.

The Supreme Court in its verdict in March 2018 had introduced safeguards which, Dalit leaders and organizations cited, diluted the Act and cause to be it ineffectual.

BJP ally and Lok Janshakti Party president Ram Vilas Paswan had led the call to bring a new law to knock over the Top court ruling. A number of ruling party MPs belonging to Dalit and tribal communities had also supported the same demand.

Worth mention here The Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act is commonly known as POA, the SC/ST Act, the Prevention of Atrocities Act, or simply the Atrocities Act. The SC/ST Act was put into practice from September 9, 1989 while The rules for the Act were informed on March 31, 1995.
