Chaitra Navratri which is falling on 18th of March, 2018. Chaitra Navratri is one of the highly popular festivals celebrated in India. 

The festival is celebrated over the period of nine days that is from the  Pratipada (first day) to the Navami (ninth day) during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in the month of Chaitra (March – April). Notably, Chaitra marks the first month of the year and therefore sets a phase for the celebrations and events of the year. 

The different names of this festival are Vasanta Navratri (commemorating the spring season) or Rama Navratri (also dedicated to the birth of Lord Rama). The top highlight of the festival is celebrating the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Here we are going to let you know about some important benefits and fasting rules that you should do on Chaitra Navratri. Have a look. 

-Chaitra Navratri Puja
Before the start of the event, the house is well cleaned and decorated. The altar is set up with the idol or picture of Mother Durga. The Chaitra Navratri puja is done every day in the evening after sunset. The proceedings of the puja are the same as those of the Shardiya Navratri. 

The nine forms of Durga are worshipped successively over the nine days one by one in the following manner.

Pratipada (1st Day): Goddess Shilputri

Dwitiya (2nd Day): Goddess Brahmacharni

Tritiya (3rd Day): Goddess Chandraghanta

Chaturti (4th Day): Goddess Kushmanda

Panchami (5th Day): Goddess Skandamata

Sashti (6th Day): Goddess Katyayani

Saptami (7th Day): Goddess Kalaratri

Ashtami (8th Day): Goddess Mahagauri

Navami (9th Day): Goddess Siddhidatri

During the puja, the picture or idol of Ma Durga is decorated with flowers, sandal paste, turmeric paste and vermilion. The important offerings made include fruits, specially prepared sweets and delicacies, incense, arati and others.
On each of the days, Durga Sapta Sati, Lalita Sahasranam and other sacred chants of Ma Durga can be chanted. After the puja is over, the Prasad is shared among the participants. Gifting maiden girls with the objects they desire during the course of Navratri days is believed to win the blessings of Ma Durga.

-Chaitra Navratri Fasting Rules
During the course of the nine days of the puja, the devotees must eat only Satvik food or those that are not spicy (ex. Garlic and onion). Some of the most popular choices for the special diet include potatoes, curd, milk and fruits. Non-vegetarian foods are strictly prohibited. The fast starts on the Pratipada day and lasts till the last day of the nine day puja. The fasting is concluded after partaking the Prasad. In a stricter form of vrat, the devotees eat only one meal a day over the nine days.
