Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], Jan 13 (NT): As the city is ready to give a grand welcome to the harvest season celebrations in the wake of the Bogi festival have resulted in dense smog, thus break off flight services from 3 am on Saturday morning.

As per reports, nearly 12 flights were diverted and nearly 30 delayed in observation of the smoke produced because of the ritualistic burning of old articles on account of festive celebrations, which has made a cause of a dip in visibility.

Bogi festival is marked as the first day of Pongal and which is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra, who is worshiped for the wealth of harvest, in that way bringing plenty of prosperity to the land.

To celebrate this, people clean out their homes and collect all redundant goods, which are then thrown into a fire made of wood and cow-dung cakes. Girls dance in the region of the bonfire, singing songs in paying tribute to God, the spring, and the harvest. The importance of the bonfire is to remain warm for the duration of the last lap of wintry weather.

A special pooja is also offered on the first day of Pongal before the cutting of paddy. Farmers worship the sun and the earth by anointing their plows and sickles (instruments for cutting crops) with sandalwood paste. It is with these sacred tools by that the newly-harvested rice is hacked. (NT)
