China may have quietly moved tones of military gear while it was conducting military exercises in the remote mountainous Tibet region, the PLA Daily, the official mouthpiece of Chinese military, has claimed.

“The vast haul was transported to a region south of the Kunlun mountains in northern Tibet by the western theatre command, which oversees the restive regions of Xinjiang and Tibet, and handles border issues with India,” the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post said on Wednesday, quoting the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Daily.

Ni Lexiong, a Shanghai-based military commentator, told the South China Morning Post, “Diplomatic talks must be backed by military preparation”, adding that the transfer of equipment was most likely related to the stand-off and could have been designed to bring India to the negotiating table. The haul, according to the PLA Daily, was transported to a region south of the Kunlun Mountains in northern Tibet by the Western Theatre Command. This unit oversees the restive regions of Xinjiang and Tibet, and handles border issues.

India has nearly two lakh troops stationed in the areas it disputes with China, outnumbering its neighbour's forces by as much as 15 or 20 to one. Nonetheless, China has a clear advantage in terms of speed of movement, firepower, and logistics, according to experts.
