A few days before the start of the monsoon session, Congress President Rahul Gandhi asked PM Modi to write a letter to ensure that the bill for giving 33 per cent reservation to women in parliament and legislative assemblies was passed. This is trending on social media that in response to this, the BJP has asked Triple Divorce and Nikah Halala to support the Congress.
There was a rhetoric between the BJP and the Congress leaders that Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O'Brien tweeted praising his party, "It is proud to be a party worker who has already. There are 33 per cent women in the Lok Sabha."
A news website team tried to check how serious our political parties are in terms of a giving ticket to women. For this, the data of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections was analyzed.
In the current 16th Lok Sabha, there are only 62 women MPs. It is only 11 percent of the total MPs. One of the reasons for this low number is that only 668 female candidates were contestants out of a total of 8,251 candidates contested in the country.
For this most can be considered as national and regional parties which have shown very little confidence in women candidates. Only West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the only exception in this case.
The ruling BJP had fielded candidates in 428 seats in 2014, out of which only 38 were women candidates. In this way, the party had given tickets to only 8.8 percent of the women. The party won a total of 282 seats.
Congress won only 44 seats. Congress has given a ticket to only 60 of the total 464 candidates . In this way, even in the Congress, the share of women candidates was only 12.9 per cent.
Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had fielded its candidates in 439 seats and the share of female candidates was 13.4 per cent. The party had given a ticket to 59 women candidates.
In this case, the satisfactory record has been the regional party Trinamool Congress. The party, led by Mamta Banerjee, contested 45 seats and the number of women in this was 15. That is, she had fielded women candidates in 33 per cent of the seats according to the demand.
In this case, the record of regional parties like Mayawati's BSP and Jayalalithaa Party AIADMK was poor. AIADMK had just released 10 percent female candidates, while the BSP gave tickets to only 5.3 percent of the women.
