The Himachal Pradesh gone, the Congress is decreased to 4states in the country. The BJP was at 44 seats in the 68- seater assembly of the hill state. Home Minister Rajnath Singh was the first to respond to the Himachal performance as he said- "We will form a majority government"in both the states.A total of 337 candidates contested the November 9 election in Himachal Pradesh. A total of 37,83,580 people voted in the hill state -- a record 75.28 percent polling. The Congress and the Bharti Janta Party contested in all the 68 constituencies. Most exit polls had predicted the BJP's return to power with a majority.

The state has alternative elected Congress and BJP since 1985. In 2012, the Congress won 36 seats and the BJP 26. Independents bagged six seats. It may be noted that prior to the elections, Congress was in power in Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Mizoram, and Meghalaya. With Himachal Pradesh gone, the party is thus reduced to just four states in the country. While the elections are already being viewed as a substance to the 2019 General elections, a higher number of states in its pocket will also help the BJP in Rajya Sabha where it is currently in a relatively weaker position against Lok Sabha.
