NEW DELHI: Contrary to earlier claims from Congress leaders, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi's rise to take a position of mother Sonia Gandhi as party chief seems to have been on hold.

When a meeting of the Congress Working Committee will hold, Congress leaders said the election of the party chief may now be possible after the Gujarat Assembly elections.

The expected holdup flies in the face of repetitive intimation from the senior Congress leaders over the last couple of months that Rahul was set to take over the reins just subsequent to Diwali and ahead of the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections.

These assert were politically noteworthy as they meant that the Gandhi scion would campaign in Gujarat as Congress chief. in the middle of constant holdup, the last window for elevation was assumed to be the time between the polling in Himachal Pradesh on November 9 and November 19, which is the birth anniversary of first lady PM  and legendary political queen Indira Gandhi .

A senior leader said the elevation amid a taut campaign schedule in Gujarat would form a "needless disruption" for party workers, a cause why it may now take place afterwards.
