Cyclone Gaja to hit Tamil Nadu, Puducherry today: Know details

The Met department of India on Wednesday issued a storm surge warning for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as Cyclone Gaja is to hit in these places. It asserted in its warning  bulletin on Wednesday, “Storm surge of height of about 1.0 meter above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal district of Puducherry at the time of landfall.”

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has been using their micro blogging website Twitter account to spread awareness about the safety measures people living in the affected areas can taking earlier than, during and post the storm.

-Some of the measures include keeping your mobile phones charged to ensure connectivity

-Listen to radio, watch TV and read newspapers for weather updates and ignore rumours

 -Keep boats/ rafts tied up in a safe place

-Don’t venture out in sea during storm and do not enter damaged buildings after the storm has passed.

A Navy official informed news agency PTI that two Indian Naval ships named Ranvir and Khajar - were standing for proceed to the most affected areas to undertake humanitarian help and distress relief. Besides these helicopters, Dornier aircraft and one P8I aircraft are also on standby to undertake rescue operations.
