Today (March 10) on her death anniversary lets remember the Indian social reformer and poet, Savitribai Jyotirao Phule, for her contribution to the Indian society. She played a significant role in improving women rights during British rule in India. Along with this, she founded the first girl's school in Pune with her husband Jyotirao Phule. She also worked to abolish discrimination and unfair treatment of people based on caste and gender. She is regarded as an important figure of the social reform movement in Maharashtra.

Born on January 3, 1831, and getting married at the age of nine. She was the first teacher who took the responsibility to educate Indian women. Together with her husband, she taught children from different castes and opened a total of 18 schools.
In the clinic of her adopted child 
Yashwant, while carrying a patient suffering from Third Pandemic plague, she contracted the disease and died on March 10, 1897, due to the infection.

Some of her lines through which she wanted to give a message to the world are:

"Birds, animals, monkeys, human beings too,
All go through life and death
But if you gain no knowledge about this,
How then can you be called a human being?"
