'Did it consciously as no option was left', says Retd Justice Kurian Joseph on presser by four judges

New Delhi: Justice Kurian Joseph who retired two days before stated neither the Top Court nor any other court can mess about in people’s faith and rituals as long as the latter is contained by the ambit of Article 25 of the Constitution of India. Joseph also stated he didn’t be disappointed for participating in January press conference which hurled the issue of assignment of cases.

In the press meet held on January 12, four senior-most judges of the top court listed a litany of problems affecting the top court which they warned could wipe out Indian democracy. The presser was held by four senior judges Justice J Chelameswar, Justices Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph.

In the press meet it was alleged that “sensitive cases were being allocated to junior judges” by then Chief Justice Dipak Misra. The four judges stated “unless Supreme Court is preserved, democracy will not survive”

In a recently held press conference on November 30, Joseph stated he didn’t regret the decision to go public in opposition to then Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

“After we spoke out to the nation there has been transparency,” he stated, adding “After the new Chef Justice of India (Ranjan Gogoi) took charge, some things have changed. But it takes time”.

“I don't regret it. I did it consciously as no option was left. I can't say that crisis is over. It was an institutional crisis and it takes time for system to change. It's changing and the process will continue,” The leading news agency ANI quoted the retired SC judge as saying.
