Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Professor Atul Johri was called by the police for an enquiry on Tuesday after students alleged him of sexually harassing female students in the class.

Delhi police have registered eight FIRs against the Professor for sexual misconduct.

“We have recorded the statements of the complainants. A few more female students have approached the police and levelled similar allegations against Johri. It is being examined. Legal action will be initiated,” informed Joint Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhary.

On Sunday, nine female students filed complaints against Professor Atul Johri with the police. The students accused him of sexual misconduct and abuse of power. Johri is a professor at the School of Life Sciences at the university.

According to the students, Atul Johri is backed by right-wing outfit. He is said to be a ‘favorite nominee’ for several committees of the vice-chancellor of the university.

“Recognising his position in power corridors and his efforts to interfere and tamper with evidence, it is important to immediately suspend and arrest Prof. Atul Johri,” said Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union in a statement.

On Sunday evening, a Twitter campaign was launched by the students with a hashtag SuspendJohri, demanding action against the professor.
