San Francisco offers five big experiences that continually dominate travel guides and websites. But unlike Africa, you won’t have to spend days in discomfort trying to find an elusive leopard. This city got everything for every traveler. Actually San Francisco, in northern California, is a hilly city on the tip of a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. It's known for its year-round fog, iconic Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars and colorful Victorian houses. In this article, we will guide you that how you can explore the main attraction of this vivacious city only in two days.

GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

The world’s most famous bridge is great to view from both land and a boat on the bay. It’s also accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, with several spots to stop and take photos.

A great way to experience the Golden Gate Bridge is to hire a bicycle from one of several operators in the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Families can hire tandem bikes and the ride to the bridge and across it takes only an hour or so.

SAY HI TO SEA LIONS

At Fisherman’s Wharf’s Pier 39 lives a large colony of barking and often stinky sea lions. They have made the pier their home for almost 30 years and are one of the city’s most popular attractions.

And in good news for travelers to what can be an expensive city, they’re free to see. It’s a good place to stop after dropping off a bicycle or stepping off a cruise.

DINNER ON THE WATERFRONT

San Francisco is famous for its fresh seafood, and whether you like crabs and clam chowder or steak and chips, there are plenty of options at Fisherman’s Wharf.

It’s the city’s most popular tourist spot so there are plenty of seafood restaurants and other themed places to eat. The Franciscan Crab restaurant has good service, good reviews and great views of the bay and a famous island that sits in the middle of it.

Dinner on the waterfront is a good way to end day one of your two-day big five experience.

A word of warning for travelers with a car: Parking in the Fisherman’s Wharf area is among the most expensive anywhere in the world.

ALCATRAZ ISLAND

It’s the top tourist attraction in San Francisco and a short ferry ride from Fisherman’s Wharf. Only one company — Alcatraz Cruises — takes people to and from the island.

A self-guided audio tour features stories from former prisoners and guards, and apart from the popular main cellblock, there are barracks and forts, a morgue, other buildings, and gardens.

A round-trip tour can take about three hours including the ferry transfers, and some experts recommend visiting in the afternoon when there’s less chance of fog blocking your views of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge. Tickets can sell out months in advance so it pays to plan early.
