Facebook Superemo  Mark Zuckerberg was today summoned before a UK parliamentary committee amid a growing uproar over data breaches linked to his popular social media company.

The summons letter to 33-year-old Zuckerberg was sent by the chair of the committee that is examining the issue of fake news.

The letter states, “it is now time to hear from a senior Facebook executive with the sufficient authority to give an accurate account of this catastrophic failure of process”.

The letter has come as the UK's Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said she would be applying to court for a warrant to investigate the offices of the UK-based political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica.

The firm is accused of using the data of 50 million Facebook users to influence the 2016 US presidential election.

Meanwhile, Cambridge Analytica on Tuesday suspended its chief executive, Alexander Nix, amid an uproar over the access as it gained to private information on more than 50 million Facebook users.

Following this uproar FB shares fell for a second day on Tuesday and closing down 2.5 percent, as investors concerned that its dealings with the firm might smash up its reputation, put off advertisers and invite restrictive regulation. Till now The company has lost $60 billion (£43bn) of its stock market value.
