The reason behind the black sand colour is constant volcanic activity; you will find a mix of both black and white sands on this island of Hawaii. These boulders are in fact a group of huge spherical ‘stones,’ which have now become a huge attraction point for tourists and locals alike. These boulders weigh several tonnes and some of them are 2 m high. According to scientists, these boulders are calcite concentrations that were formed around 65 million years ago.
