The Antigua government has given clearance on giving citizenship to the fugitive Mehul Choksi, who fled the country after looting thousands of crores of rupees from many banks including Punjab National Bank. The Antigua government said that the government of India had given a clean chit to the fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi, after which he has been granted citizenship. 

Antigua also said that there was no information against Choksi from the Indian government. Even the SEBI had approved the name of Choksi. The background of Choksi was examined strictly, but neither the Indian government nor SEBI presented some evidence against him.

Significantly, the Antigua Authority has confirmed that Mehul Choksi, a fugitive declared diamond merchant in India, is in his country. Mehul Choksi and his nephew Neerav Modi have reportedly told the mastermind of several billion dollar scams in India. The Antigua government has also said that if the Indian government asks for the extradition of Mehul Choksi, then they will respectfully extend all help to them while respecting the request.  

The Congress has targeted the Narendra Modi government for Mehul Choksi's citizenship of Antigua. Diamond trader Mehul Choksi, who fled from the country by taking a number of billion dollars from the country, including the Punjab National Bank and claiming it would raise doubts about the seriousness of the government.
