Former India Test captain Ajit Wadekar dies at 77

Mumbai: Ajit Wadekar, The former Indian Test captain who the first captain to lead Indian team to overseas test victory, passed away, BCCI confirmed.

He is one of the most iconic names in the cricket world of the country, died at the age of 77 on Wednesday. Wadekar is regarded as one of the gems of Indian cricket and captained the Indian teams that recorded historic wins in England and West Indies. The news of his demise was confirmed by Times Now late on Wednesday. He took last breath in Mumbai.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also confirmed the news of the demise of Wadekar via their Twitter account, as saying "With a heavy heart we bid adieu to Ajit Wadekar. The former India captain is no more. Cricketer, Coach, Manager and Chairman of Selectors - Mr Wadekar served Indian cricket in many different ways."

Rajyavardhan Rathore, Minister of State (I/C) Youth Affairs & Sports, MoS (I/C) Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India and Olympic medalist, Military Man took twitter to expressed his condolence, and said,  “Sad news from Mumbai. Ajit Wadekar, the first captain to lead Indian team to overseas test victory, passes away. He was an institution in himself and India has lost a prolific cricketer with his demise”.

Taking about his career Wadekar played 37 Tests for India.He made his debut in 1966 against the West Indies and was named the Indian team skipper in 1971.
