The health consequences of extreme consumption of alcohol are enormous. Many studies have associated heavy alcohol use to a number of problems, which includes liver disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and digestive problems. Over time, drinking too much can also lead to cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, oesophagus, liver, and colon. But a fresh research has warned that heavy drinking can also take a toll on your skin. It can also worsen pre-existing skin conditions and leave you vulnerable to skin problems that pose a risk to your health, states from Express.co.uk.

One unit equals 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol, which is the amount of alcohol the average adult can process in an hour, as per the National Health Service, England. Men and women are warned not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis. While the hangover can subside after 24 hours, the research found that the effects on the skin for a woman aged 40 can last 28 days. Younger women bounce back faster but skin ageing on those in their 20s still lasts a couple of weeks.

Besides this, for men, their skin is able to cope with the effects quicker but it can still take at least a week to recover. Other indications of heavy drinking include dark circles and puffiness around the eyes, dehydration on the forehead, chin and lips causes lines and wrinkles. In addition, broken blood vessels on the cheeks and nose can also cause redness, making skin to become loose and sags.
