Goa taxi drivers end strike after written assurance from government

Tourist taxi drivers closed their strike on Sunday. Taxi drivers decided to end the strike after writing assurances for issuing a fitness certificate to all tourist taxis till January 24 and preventing the government from imposing speed governors in their vehicles.

Tourists and locals faced huge difficulties due to a three-day strike. The strike was abated immediately after meeting with the taxi driver association and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Assembly Vice President Michael Lobo. This meeting took place at the Chief Minister's official residence.

North Goa tourist tax union spokesman Laxman Korgaonkar told reporters, "We are just withdrawing the strike after assurances written by Lobo. Lobo has said that if the taxi drivers are not given fitness certificates till January 24 without Speed Speeders, then they will resign from the BJP. We still do not trust the Chief Minister, but we are giving an opportunity to the government.

He said that taxi drivers started a strike on Friday against the alleged harassment of transport officers and police and mandatory speed governors to be imposed. Lobo told the reporters, "As far as speed governors are concerned, demanding relief for taxi drivers in Goa, the state government will file an intervention petition in the Supreme Court which will say that the speed in Goa is not possible. It is because it is a small state and roads are narrow.

The Supreme Court had ordered the imposition of speed governors in the tourist taxis last year. The court had given this order on a petition by an NGO based security organization of Delhi. State Transport Department refused to give a fitness certificate to taxis without imposing speed governors. Parrikar told reporters that the state government also believes that speed governors are not practical in tourist taxis and this attitude will be presented in the apex court.

He said, "There is no issue with regard to keeping this idea in the Supreme Court. We do not believe in ourselves that due to the speed limit of 80 km per hour, there will be some change on the ground, it should actually be 100 km. They said there are few cases of accident related to taxis in the state.
