While pausing the ongoing speculation, Google announced Thursday (September 21st) the acquisition of the Taiwan-based HTC division's mobile division team for 1.1 billion dollars. Some HTC employees working with Google to develop a pixel smartphone will now be included in Google. However, HTC will continue the business of its smartphone even after some of its employees and Google's responsibility to operate. Google will also get a non-exclusive license for separate HTC Intellectual Property (IP).

Ric Osterloh, Senior Vice President, Hardware Cell in Google said in his statement, "HTC has been a partner with Google for a long time and has made some great and premium tools." He further said, "We are very excited to welcome HTC employees who are joining Google to innovate and develop consumer hardware." The transaction process is expected to be completed by the beginning of the year 2018. Google announced the purchase of Motorola Mobile for $ 12.5 billion six years ago, and in 2014 it sold it again to Lenovo.

While investing in other Next Generation Technology, including Internet of Things (IoT), Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence (AI), HTC will continue to build a virtual reality ecosystem to develop its own business. After the successful launch of HTC U11 at the beginning of this year, HTC will also keep the best engineering talent working on the next flagship phone.

Google will use HTC's IP to support the pixels smartphone family. Apart from this, this agreement also represents the investment made by Google in Taiwan as an important innovation and technology center. HTC's chairwoman and CEO Cher Wang said, "Our unmatched smartphone value chain, including our IP portfolio and world-class talent and system integration capabilities, has supported Google in strengthening the Android market."
